Minor’s Counsel

Dan DeSario serves as Minor’s Counsel for the Los Angeles Superior Court, providing independent, child-focused representation in custody matters where the court seeks to ensure that a child’s best interests remain the central priority. With more than 40 years of family law experience, he brings a steady, thoughtful approach to even the most complex and high-conflict disputes, working to ensure that each child’s voice is heard while prioritizing their safety, stability, and overall well-being. In cases where families are navigating difficult custody issues, Mr. DeSario takes the time to understand each child’s unique circumstances, speaks with the important people in their lives, and assists the court in making informed decisions that support long-term stability. Known for his calm and balanced approach, he serves as a consistent and reassuring presence for children during what can be an overwhelming process for families, and his practice is supported by a bilingual (Spanish-speaking) staff to effectively serve diverse communities.

When concerns arise about a child’s well-being, the Court may appoint Minor’s Counsel to help ensure their needs are properly heard and protected. When Mr. DeSario is appointed as Minor’s Counsel, he takes the time to understand what the child is experiencing and works to ensure their needs remain at the center of the case. Mr. DeSario takes a thorough and thoughtful approach to each appointment. He may meet with the child, speak with both parents, review court records, and communicate with teachers, caregivers, and other professionals involved in the child’s life. When appropriate, he also reviews educational, medical, and mental health information to develop a clear understanding of what will best support the child’s well-being. Where appropriate, he will share the child’s wishes with the Court and advise if the child would like to speak directly with the judge—always in a way that protects the child from unnecessary stress or being placed in the middle of conflict.

With more than four decades of experience in family law, Mr. DeSario brings a steady, balanced approach to even the most difficult cases. He understands that these matters are deeply personal, and he works to provide the Court with clear, objective insight while helping families move toward more stable and workable outcomes for their children. His experience includes high-conflict custody matters, cases involving children with special needs, and matters involving the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
